Was an early responder in coverage of Copley shooting spree that left seven victims and the shooter dead. Covered Al Sharpton speech on Akron-Fairlawn-Copley schools controversy. Filled in as Local Editor on medium- and long-term assignments for sites in Cuyahoga Falls, Fairlawn-Bath, Stow, Brecksville, Avon and Strongsville. Robust use of social media to promote sites, using both personal and Patch identities. Immersed in community as resident and stakeholder.

Conceived and ghost wrote social media and blog posts for high-profile client (Harvard business school professor, former CEO).

  • Case Western Reserve University, 2010

Organized, planned, wrote and edited content for The Daily, the daily digital internal newsletter for the Case Western Reserve University community. Fact-checked, resolved conflicts of information. Promoted The Daily on Facebook. Consulted with Director of Communications as needed on daily basis. Innovations included adding graphic elements to better set apart news items, proposals to expand coverage to include sports.

Reported, compiled and edited high school sports-oriented news. Coordinated efforts of correspondents, photographers, assistants and an intern, all on daily deadlines. Produced Facebook posts. Made headlines catchier and improved overall content quality. Shot and edited photographs; wrote, edited and posted text, audio and video. Unique visitors to site grew to a peak of 70,000 visits in a month, almost entirely from four counties.

  • Deputy Metro Editor (January-October 2006)

Supervised six reporters and 12 correspondents, covering Akron and surrounding communities at the Beacon Journal, a Pulitzer Prize winning newspaper. Recruited and developed correspondents, doubling correspondent staff to 12, more than doubling community coverage, particularly local governance. Managed content for Ohio.com, the newspaper’s website, led effort to post breaking news instantaneously. Liaison for ABC broadcast affiliate WEWS-NewsChannel 5’s news team.

  • Deputy Copy Desk Chief (January 2000-January 2006)

Assistant manager of 16 copy editors; coordinated daily news production and maintained page flow. Led successful weather page redesign (negotiated lower price) and developed process for online breaking news updates. Assisted in recruiting, hiring, coaching and mentoring of staff. Led improvement of daily copy.

  • Assistant National Editor/copy editor (July 1996-January 2000)

Assembled and rewrote wire stories for the daily paper. Prepared and planned news budget for national and world report, coordinated reports with graphics and photography, planned weekend packages. Proposed and executed “Breaking News” for daily use on front page First Word column to give readers something they didn’t know about after watching the evening news.
